Computex Day 3: Gigabyte's GoOC overclocking worldwide finals wrap up, and tuck a few new records in its belt.
GIGABYTE and overclocking go together as well as a fine red wine and a great spaghetti, so naturally when you chuck a lot of their gear into a room with the world's finest overclockers you're gonna get something special - enter the GoOC 2009 Finals.
Six teams from around the world made it through regional semifinals to make it to Taipei (Taiwan), to the 34th floor of the Taipei 101 building; Belgium, Sweden, China, Australia (woot) and two teams from USA.
Each were given the following tech:
There were only six teams competing (down from over twenty last year), but it was frenetic - each were very close in skill to the other contestants.
The competition kicked off with a small setup time for hardware - the copper CPU pots needed installation - and finally the first challenge began: SuperPI 32M.
Team Belgium pulled ahead with their golden 975 chip that clocked easier than the rest, hitting 5.5GHz in a very short time and giving them the #1 slot in a time of 6.4 seconds, followed by Sweden and USA1.
3DMark Vantage was next after another short setup time for GPU pots, where efficiency and grunt need to be balanced to get the best score.
USA1 got the best score with 27642, followed by China at 26179 and Australia at 26088, while USA2 couldn't coax their hardware into providing a score.
Team USA1 won GoOC 2009, winning US$5000 and an 80GB SSD from Intel for their performance as well as every contestant winning the gear they benched with.
