Atomic hosts a night of zombie-killing goodness.

To say we're pretty experienced at hosting LANs at Atomic HQ is a relative understatement - but each time we like to mix it up a bit and give something unique. When we learned that Left 4 Dead 2 was coming pretty darn quickly we knew we had to grab some copies.

Developed by Valve and distributed online via their Steam service (though also distributed in physical form by Electronic Arts), the aim of the game is to form a group of four 'survivors' against the zombie hordes. We grabbed 24 Atomicans and formed them into six teams of survivors, pitting them against the first chapter in the game, Hard Rain. They were also thrown onto Realism mode - if one of the team die, they don't get a respawn.

Ultimately the winning team was the one that could survive the longest against increasingly desperate brain-loving zombies, and the winning performance was delivered by Team Tank. They scored a full copy of the game courtesy of Electronic Arts for their prowess, gaining the awe of the competitors in the process.

We also had Atomicans dress up as survivors of the zombie apocalypse, with some very inventive costumes scoring two lucky people a copy of the game. On top of all the free gameage, we also had beer and pizza.

Thanks to all the Atomicans who made it on the night, and a huge thanks to Electronic Arts for helping out with the prizes!

Lovin' the pics..Hawkeye is looking more hairy face wise! Good to see that some people made an effort! I thought someone would have done a Shaun of the Dead costume.

Looks like a lot of fun, as most events at Atomic HQ seem to be.

Don't fight, run, run for your life!

It was a great night... there were some issues with getting 4 players in the same game with a stable experience.

It was a rather disappointingly mono-gender event... with men being the dominant demographic on the night.

Unfortunately, men are the dominant entrants - not a lot we can do about that!

I suspected that was the case. I did feel that my team lost because I had a pair of console gamers on my team, not because one of them was female. Damn dirty Xbox players... 'where's the auto aim???'

Actually.....the girl on your team was the last to die!

That's because the 12 foot tall ball of mutant zombie meat found the guy with the most health and the shotgun the most appealing snack at the time. Oh yeah, that was me.

Great night eh? The Bogan and Hunter to be must have had some serious 'costume downtime' as were suited as actual game characters..Not to mention the 'Australian Release, Gilchrist Avenger' ;)
Great effort everyone, it was really beyond expectations.
One..No, two words..
Bloody Fantastic!
If there were ever a safe house I'd hope to be in against the zombie apocalypse, (beer 'n' pizza included) it'd be an atomican one!

(Still totally stoked over the results of the night, and glad you liked 'Smokey' the rat..)

hehe thx glitch.. as the bogan (and with the amount of time spent into my costume) I was a bit heart ached that i didn't get a copy of L4D2 .
The photo's don't show it , but I was actually wearing Ugg-boots! The quintessential bogan that is..

No worries eh? ;)..and sorry to hear man, I thought you were right on the money.
Too true..(not that looking at feet is a hobby) but I didn't notice at all till you were on the stairs!
-The quintessential bogan addition is duly noted ;)

..maybe next LAN they'll do some sort of "runner's up" or 1st,2nd,3rd arrangement? It's as regular as a pup's poop but will surely leave many a bogan grinnin' ;)

I seriously thought the Bogan > Science Teacher... and the bugger scored 2 copies anyway. Well done man, your outfit was pro.

Haha thankyou very much. I admire skye for his effort's on the gadgets and all- it was well pieced.
You guys shoulda spoken up or somethin heh.
I basically had this idea "It's during my exams so since i haven't been playing left 4 dead or anything, I may as well try and make the most of it by winning the costume competition". We need a consensus lol ; )

Was reading the thread about the LAN night - http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=23335

and was wondering what costume that tehoriginal had?

I was the aforementioned bogan ;- P .

@hawkeye - That would be sweet. Though the night was excellent, I couldn't have been happier with the way it went considering the crashes and such. Very delighted to be a new member of the atomic community.

p.s.
tf2 lan next time ? And I assure you , I won't need a 1.5min excuse for winning ;)

Nov 19, 2009 11:17 PM
Hmmm..

I'd be really interested in seeing how we all made the most of the 50 word limit to enter the comp, it was a challenge in itself..

-What's TF2? or even Cod MOW2?

Team Fortress 2, and I'm assuming Modern Warfare 2.

I reckon Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 LAN nights on the agenda for 2010.
