Starcraft II Beta first impressions

Make me a matchmaker

Matchmaking services are typically less favoured due to the lack of control they offer, but we just wanted to jump into a game and get killing stuff. Ten placement matches need to be completed in both 1v1 and 2v2 modes to be given a ranking, with Free For All (FFA) also requiring ten plays. While you can choose a custom game, this isn't ranked, so we jumped into a 2v2 match - only to be slapped back with a notification at the top that we were downloading ten files! It seems that the maps that you'll actually play with aren't included in the 1.64GB, but thankfully they're only roughly 6MB each. The downloader also seemed a little broken, as we downloaded one file to 13619%, and another reached 30453% before it decided to finish.

Picking Protoss (like wearing a very comfortable pair of old shoes), we found a match after only a few seconds, and were presented with a simple loading screen. Paired with Vandris' Terran team, we were pitted against Nomiad's Protoss force and rapp's Zerg scourge in the popular map, Lost Temple. The interface is practically identical to the original Starcraft, and all old shortcuts will still work - indeed, as we'll describe soon, the same strategies too. Quickly setting up a base and a strong economy, and progressing through the tech tree (each side's tree can be seen here), we set up what would be a pretty decent threat. Or so we thought.

Progressing quickly through the tech trees to get access to the interesting - and new - units, our ally came under attack from a Zergling rush and a Zealot rush, wiping out a few SCVs and causing them to confusingly quit, leaving us to fight against two opponents. While we rushed to pump units to face this sudden unbalance, they managed to overwhelm with sheer numbers and handed us our arse on a silver platter.

After we were unceremoniously wiped from the face of the map, we were presented with a summary of our performance...

I'm still well keen, merely polish or no.

Really, i'd be much happier to get back into SC (and still do from time to time) just with updated graphics. 640x480 on a 22" (only other alternative being 40") is kinda nasty, versus what we're used to these days!

And that multiplayer blow-by-blow list sounds really good...

Not the biggest fan of starcraft (have always enjoyed the strategies OF TA / DR / C&C) and it sounds like the same old - having read what you wrote, it does seems to lack innovation and relies more on nostalgia. Im looking forward to supreme commander and the new C&C more.

As with all betas - its a BETA. Very much looking forward to the SP and some not so competitive team matches.

RTS MP has always bored the crap out of me. It always seems to be, in general, more effective to Rush than do anything else. Making, in the end, a strategy and thought based game into a lag and reflex testing game.

I hope the SP is worth the cost.

Nice, so jealous :D

One thing that I thought was cool is if you keep playing it gathers data on you and it will place you in a league and division based on your skills. Gah, can't wait to play this!

I observed the different strats as they emerged and changed over time - and with patches and expansions - in both Starcraft and Diablo 2. The community will eventually expand and grow past existing tactics, it'll just take time.

For my part, I'm looking forward to the new custom maps (DotA and Tower Defence, anybody?) that the new game/scripting editor will enable.

I'm with thesorehead on this one, those modders are going to produce some amazing stuff, I'm sure.

Yeah, the worldbuilder has been one area that I've been waiting to see. I spent hours in the first one, making my own bunker wars maps and other awesome things, so I've got big hopes for the new version.

Nice review of the beta. I'm slightly excited and disappointed though.

On one hand it sounds like it's brought over a lot of what made the other game fun (some RTS gameplay that made it such a great game) but it does indeed sound entirely like Starcraft 1. 2v2 games have always had that tactic of "you both build a small force and rush 1 guy, gg".

Problem is that we didn't get to see a review of what a longer game was like and if there were greater tactics with the new units, etc. THATS what I really want to see, at least in the videos I've seen thus far of 1v1 games.
