Conclusion
There’s no denying the i-RAM is fast, innovative, and simply sexy. But is it really that useful at this stage? It could be used as a boot drive, and 4G is enough for Windows and a fair few apps, but it’d be wise to point Windows to your hard drive to store user directories. This way your desktop settings will always be preserved, even if the drive should lose its contents.
Alternatively, it could be used as a data drive, but at the current 4 gigs limit there’s really not to much you can put there aside from a few games.
You could use the i-RAM as a scratch disk for graphics work or for the Windows swap, but for the cost of the card and the RAM you’d be better off spending the money expanding the main system memory.
The most realistic use could well be for web and database servers for which the seek and throughput times could vastly accelerate performance, but again it’s not a huge data space for the moment.
Overall with the ability to mix and match DDR RAM modules of various sizes you can put old RAM from previous upgrades to good use for just a couple hundred bucks, not to mention gain bragging rights and impress the opposite sex with your speed.
At the very least Gigabyte is pioneering a new storage device, and we can’t wait to see just what the next generation i-RAM will bring, not to mention the competition it could start for such devices on the market.
If you want one, production ready i-RAMs should be available in time for Christmas.
