Top five Deus Ex: Human Revolution tips

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is out in a couple of days, and we've got some important tips to help you conquer this sprawling cyberpunk RPG epic.

We've had a couple of runs through the early stages of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, now, and we've learnt a few things. We've messed around with different augmentation builds for the game's main character, Adam Jensen, learnt what makes the game, and made a lot of fatal mistakes.

So now, you can profit from our pain. Here's our top five tips for making the most of your playthrough.

1. Hacking – boost it. Seriously, this is practically the most important skill in the game. Not only will it let you bypass a lot of security even at the most basic levels, but at higher skill levels you’ll be controlling turrets and robots to boot. There is nothing more rewarding than turning some poor guard’s robot buddy on him, and then rifling his corpse for change.

2. Pay attention – to everything. This is a tool tip in the game, pretty much, but we can’t stress this one enough. If you can get into a computer, do it. If you can grab or steal a pocket secretary, do it. You’ll find passcodes, passwords and all kinds of cool game knowledge. And pay attention to things like post-its and other items you can’t necessarily interact with; even in the future there are still idiots at work who always keep their passwords written down on a piece of paper next to the monitor.

3. Hold on to your EMPs. Sure, you might be tempted to fry every aug and security camera you see with a trusty EMP grenade, but hold on to these puppies. They can deliver a one-shot kill on smaller security bots, which can otherwise be very difficult to take down with standard firearms.

4. Invest in Energy. Many skills use up your energy, some slowly over time, others chew through entire bars in a go. By boosting your Energy, you effectively make all the skills that rely on it, like Takedowns or Stealth, much more useful. Speaking of which, buy yourself a lot of Protein Bars – you’ll be nomming these down more than Painkillers.

5. Enhance your love life. Your Social Enhancer augmentation can be tricky to use, but once you master it you’ll be able to talk your way through a lot of missions without getting your hands dirty from fighting or crawling through airvents. And as it’s only a single-level ability, you can get full use of it early in the game – and you really should.
