Supreme Commander preview, screens and Podcast!

We interview Gas Powered Games’ Paul Levy about the RTS we’re all hanging for.

We recently visited THQ for a special sneak look at Supreme Commander, the extremely awesome looking RTS under development by Gas Powered Games.

This is the new game from Chris Taylor, who gained fame in the golden era of RTS games with his masterpiece Total Annihilation.

Seeing Supreme Commander in action, it’s clear that the wild promises made during early development have been honoured. We were excited to see that the almost infinite zooming is in place, and works smoothly. With just a flick of the mouse wheel, the viewpoint moves out from an extreme close up, away from the battlefield, up through the clouds, ever up so the islands and continents resembled a Civ map, and out into space.

This is where the unique strategy we’re excited about comes into play. For too long we’ve been playing RTS games that give you a very limited perspective. Now, you can position yourself just-so, giving you a full view of everything going on. Everything.

This allows you to move rapidly around the many battles taking place – another SC hallmark. During the course of a typical game, you’ll be waging battles on multiple fronts, constantly moving between them, assigning orders, then moving on again. It really does make you feel like an armchair General, and makes every other RTS feel positively claustrophobic.
