One of the more intriguing titles was The Eye of Judgement: Conquerors of 9 Fields. It's a card/board/computer game hybrid that uses an Eye Toy-type camera to track the cards on the board, letting you play offline or online and giving you some cracking hot animations on the screen.

I'm stonkingly impressed with the idea, and a quick trip to a local gaming arcade showed the full potential in the form of eight-way, real-time strategy games where players slid cards around a board. The action -- whether it was massive armies slugging it out, or mechs zipping around a ruined city -- was played out on a central screen in the middle of the room. This thing has potential, I tell ya.

Another surprise was Insomniac's FPS, Resistance. With Halo 3 and Gears of War, the Xbox may seem to have some kind of ownership on console FPS games, but Resistance looks like it could leave them both for dead. I tend to glaze over when the topic of FPS titles on consoles comes up, but the sheer aesthetic of Resistance was jaw-dropping. Or, to put it another way, it doesn't matter how it plays -- it looks so damn good that you'll need to play it and see.
