Atomic’s Game News Roundup -- 1/12/2006

Lost Planet, Supreme Commander and Rainbow Six: Vegas have some video they'd all like to share with you.

We have lots of video for you this week! Below you’ll find trailers for both Rainbow Six: Vegas and Lost Planet, as well as a video developer diary for Supreme Commander. Since we’ve heard a lot about Supreme Commander and Rainbow Six, let’s talk about Lost Planet first.

Aliens have turned the Earth into an icy wasteland, so much so that you have to go all Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back on enemy bodies to keep your body temperature up. There are 20 weapons to wield, and 17 “Vital Suits” that upgrade into vehicles and heavy tanks. It’s made by Capcom, is an Xbox 360 exclusive, has 16 player online multiplayer and looks like this…

To promote Tony Hawk’s Project 8, Activision has set up a MySpace page. Hold on, this gets much better. They’re using it to give away a Jeep Wrangler. Put together your own promotional piece and submit it, and you’re in the draw. It’s an Australia-only comp and you’ve got until the 10th of January to enter. We expect emergency rooms across the country will fill up unseasonably quickly between now and the end of the competition.

Supreme Commander is coming along nicely, as Ben will tell you in issue 72, the super-special sixth birthday issue of Atomic. The developers seem pretty pleased with it too...

TV shows and movies have been released to Xbox Live in the US. As always, we can’t use the service yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye on to see what we’ll be in for when the service is launched over here. Currently there’s a small selection of HD and SD content available, comprising mostly sci-fi and animation, along with some new release movies and trailers. Zune compatibility is a given. You pay using points, instead of that quantifiable coloured stuff you have in your wallet. Microsoft was totally unprepared for the demand for the service, which slowed to a crawl within hours of launch. Could (gasp) Bittorrent (another gasp) be the answer?

Speaking of things from the States that we want but have to wait for, reports are coming in that the wristbands that keep the Wii remote in your hand if you accidentally let go of it are breaking. It happens when people start swinging the remote around with gusto, which is worrying. Replacing the wristband should be the least of your concerns, because once the remote leaves your hand at pace without anything to hold it back, you may have to replace a window, your precious telly or a friend’s head.

We leave you with the release trailer for Rainbow Six Vegas. Not surprisingly, there’s a bonus cliché Elvis track in there!
