Aussie 3G iPhone is a bad joke

Atomic Recommended Reading: the situation, and why our first words about the iPhone are somebody else's

In the face of a metric shit-ton of hype, guess how much publicity Atomic’s given the iPhone up until now?

That’s right: NOT ONE GOD DAMNED WORD!

I feel quite proud of myself.

There are many things I don’t like about Apple, including, but not limited to, the way they deal with the press. Apple publicity does a worryingly good job of managing what people say about them. Only four iPhones were handed out to Journalists in the US, and as planned, Apple got favourable coverage out of those reviews. The same thing’s happened over here, too. I asked how much publicity -- instead of coverage -- Atomic had given the iPhone at the start of this piece for a reason.

Even though my dad has owned an imported, jailbroken, GSM iPhone for some time, and I eventually want to get one for myself (once a carrier pairs it with a decent data plan), I couldn’t bring myself to write about the bloody thing.

Apple’s collective head is so far up its own arse -- and has been for so long -- that the company and a worryingly large amount of its users seem to have confused the world with Steve Jobs’ colon. I’m sick of dealing with and analysing Macs and having people who love the taste of the Apple world ask me for my opinion on Macs only to ignore me and prattle on thoughtlessly about what they can do on a Mac (or rather could potentially do on a Mac, because they lack the skill to actually do it) based on what they heard from an advertisement.

With that in mind, it’s good to know that IT News has just published an opinion piece by Kathryn Small that echoes my sentiment on the iPhone launch, something I wanted to cover but had too much spite to actually do.

Check it out. Seriously.

The next thing you hear about the iPhone from around these parts will have something to do with the SDK or hacking or something hardcore -- I guarantee it will not be the Apple-engineered fluff that's suffocating everybody.
