And with a price tag for the bling crowd:

"24in LED-backlit Cinema Display $US8991"

The Cupertino crowd must be smoking something a little stronger these days.

jennyb should come back in the amnesty, though seeing this will only add more ethanol to the fire.

nothing that impressive except the discrete graphics, which regular laptops have been getting for years now.

How underwhelming and still overpriced.

I fail to see anything actually 'new' here.

No e-SATA?

Scootre, the $8991 is a typo, looks like someone was a little eager to hit that enter key.

Also i don't understand why the better of the midrange ones is better than the worse of the pros but costs less.

The new 15" mac book looks bloody nice, the all aluminium body is a beauty, but where's the 17" version?

Onto the monitor, well it just goes to show how good a job they did with the previous generation as they simply couldn't top them. This new one looks like crap, a case of trying to better the best it isn't going to happen. Still spec wise it looks like a good improvement and so does the price, $899US for a 24" led back lit screen is damn good. Fingers crossed there using a ips/s-pva display in it though or that sentiment might be short lived.

cheers

Oh OK. Funny though... it struck me as being a typical Apple price tag.

Yeah, it was exactly the error described, but made possible by that price being all too possible!

The Apple LED backlit screen isn't S-IPS or S-PVA. Those things cost between $2000 and $4500. For $900 you simply can't get anything other than TN.

If I'm to purchase a tech item worth thousands, it damn well better be a sexy piece of technology! It's just a waste of my cash otherwise. I'd be very happy with the new 15" MBP. And it is Christmas just around the corner *nudge*

"welcome to specs, 2007 styleeee" - what planet you must live on... given that nVidia announced the 9400m chipset the day AFTER the Apple event.

There is a typo in the specs, all macbook pros run 9400m/9600 hybrid. What IS disappointing is that a) apple transitioned fully to glossy screens and b) hybrid sli is not enabled, rumours vary whether we are awaiting a patch or 10.6 to come out.

Now, the joy of my job is I get to decide when to upgrade my work lappy, so after spending a couple of days with a new MBP - I'd never use windows for any serious work, it's only good for games ;-) Here are some thoughts:

- The glossy screen is not as bad as I feared, but editing photos is still a bit vile... Feels so PC.

- In windows you can only run the 9600 chip, which is ok as you'd only go there for games anyway.

- Grrrr... If I am playing games, I want my hybrid-sli, send me a patch already Apple.

- To switch GPUs in OSX you need to log in and out, not too annoying as you generally use 9400 on batteries and 9600 when plugged in.

- Sweet baby jeebus the new track pads are a joy, going back to a poky pc laptop ones is like jumping into a model T ford from 2008 BMW. The whole thing clicks nicely and you can assign any part to be the two buttons - sweeet. Once you get used to gestures and using multiple fingers, having to go back to an ordinary single finger trackpad feels sooo retarded.

- You still need a mouse to game.

- 9600 is ok for gaming, not amazing, but at native res is pretty good for a light laptop. Great at core image.

- Making laptops out of a solid aluminium brick is a definite improvement, watch for horde of PC makers to follow suit. My new MBP is so freaking solid for something so thin.

- Overall; couple not so good, mostly good changes. Feels little under-baked on the OS side, hope we won't have to wait till Snow Leopard to see full potential.
