LucasArts and Ensemble Studios have just announced that the two companies have begun development work in a new Star Wars strategy title to be released later this year. The game, imaginatively titled Star Wars Battleground, will use the Age of Empires engine, a proven performer in the real time strategy market.

LucasArts has been wallowing in rather poor Star Wars games for last few years, a sad decline following the golden years of Dark Forces I and II and the X Wing series of games. Force Commander, a 3D real time strategy game released a year or so back was particularly disappointing, keeping strategy gamers and Star Wars fans away in droves. LucasArts is aware of the work ahead of them in overcoming the bad karma that Force Commander left them with, and are confident that the Age of Empires model of gameplay is the way to go.

We'll just have to wait and see.
