That's exactly what NEC is doing, now ramping up serious volume production of its system on a chip, the nerve center for the upcoming Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo watched the clumsy PS2 rollout closely, and decided against manufacturing the chip, called Flipper, in house; instead outsourcing production to NEC's new 8,000 square meter facility on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

The GameCube is, strangely enough, a small cube shaped console that reads 8cm optical disks. The Flipper chip integrates graphics engine, sound card, and single transistor embedded SRAM on the one wafer. The system CPU is a special PowerPC chip running at 405MHz.
