The FBI and Microsoft and joined together to warn Windows NT users of a few… vulnerabilities inherent to the popular professional OS. This sudden outbreak of openness has been brought about due to a year of serious security exploits due to increased criminal activity from, of all people, the Russian mafia.

At least 40 companies have been hit in the last year, and probably more than a million credit cards have been stolen. The systems most at risk are ones running unpatched versions of NT. Instead of simply maliciously using the stolen data however, most often the bank or company in question is contacted by the organisation that hacked into it under the cover of being a security firm, which then offers to 'fix' the fault should a repeat hack lead to private data being published for all to see on the net. It is a level of sophistication that many did not expect of the rather heavy-handed Russians.

Of course, this is just further evidence against Microsoft for releasing poor code in the firstplace. Considering the amount of trust placed in NT by companies all over the world, that it cannot protect you from such alarming breaches of security out-of-the-box is reprehensible.
