Confusion reigns over AMD roadmap

Some of the confusion over when the next breed of AMD processors will hit the streets has been allayed by a recent roadmap release, but a whole lot more still remains. This latest map is the third to be seen in recent months. In December AMD was saying that the Palomino processor, the Thunderbird's successor, would be available sometime this quarter at speeds of up to 1.2GHz, while a more recent roadmap printed in a German magazine suggest that this is wrong, and processor watchers will be waiting until July at the earliest.

However, an even more recent roadmap, which was part of a presentation made by AMD's President and COO Hector Ruiz to the Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Semiconductor and Systems conference early this month harks back to the earlier roadmap. Interestingly, the possibly incorrect German roadmap also states that the Palomino will be shipping not at 1.2GHz, but at 1.4. This could mean that the two roadmaps are in fact cross-compatible, with 1.2GHz Palominos being released any time now, and 1.4GHz models coming out around mid year.
