If you haven't read about this in our forums, then I'm telling you this is a game that you really should be having a closer look at. Operation Flashpoint is a war simulator: part first person shooter, part tank sim, and part chopper sim. You can get in and control every vehicle in the game, from tanks to jeeps and all the way up to Blackhawk helicopters. The official demo's out, and it's already showing a lot of improvement from the Alpha code we saw earlier this year. The game is set during a fictional mid-eighties conflict between NATO and Russian forces on three mythical European islands.

The maps in the game are positively huge, and the viewable distance is quite, well, distant, meaning that sniping actually means something. Soldier AI is really quite breathtaking, with leaders ordering their men into sensible positions, proper utilisation of anti-tank personnel, and a mutable chain of command that means that as your officers get shot down, junior members take their place. Character animation is not the sharpest, but when you consider that this game's trying to represent combined arms engagements on a large scale it looks excellent.

And boy, is it realistic. Your rifle bucks in your hands as you fire, movement and shooting simply don't mix, and one hit will often mean one kill. The full version will be released some time in May, and the multiplayer demo should be with us next week. We cannot wait.
