The Atomic Maximum Power CPL Pacific event wrapped up on Sunday night with the culmination of the CS and Q3A tournaments. The Q3A tourney final was an all-international affair, with superstar player Fatal1ty taking down Korean champ Elan, with Australia's own Python coming third. As a side note to this, I must say how surreal it is to see someone using a GeForce2 Ultra equipped Pentium 4 and still turning all detail and textures down in Quake 3, but maybe that's just me.

The CS tourney was full of surprises. After some initial hiccups in the qualifying rounds the tournament boiled down to some of the best CS matches played to date. Interstate rivalry was high, with the final being tipped to be contested between Melbourne's 12m and Sydney's DG. As the weekend progressed it was clear that the underdog clan P from Sydney was on fire and becoming a serious threat to these more favoured clans.

P reached the final first, being undefeated over the course of the final rounds (they lost one match during the weekend, a whitewash by DG 16-1). 12m were knocked out by DG as the competition came to a head, relegating both of 12m's teams to fourth and fifth place. DG then took down SAS to set up an all Sydney final. Because of the double elimination nature of the competition DG was faced with an uphill battle in the final, having to defeat P twice to win. P on the other hand only had to beat DG once, which they did on de_nuke, scoring 8-1 as terrorists and the 2-0 as counterterrorists. With this unassailable position P were crowned CPL Pacific CS champions.

Congratulations are in order for all the participating clans and players. Fatal1ty again proved that he is the player to beat in the Quake 3 stakes, and a special mention goes out to Python for being the highest ranked Australian player in the competition. The members of P, Kalgo, grim chicken, Outbreak, Rase, B!GG-D and noetix all proved that with good teamplay and tactics you can still take down the favoured clans. A big thanks also goes to the organisers of the event, who dealt with a huge range of problems and the unenviable task of making such a big LAN run smoothly.

The final standings for the event were:

Q3A tournament
1st - Fatal1ty
2nd - Elan
3rd - Python
4th - Huma
5th - Janus

CounterStrike tournament
1st - Pantheon
2nd - DG
3rd - SAS
4th - 12m1
5th - 12m2
