Enough with the net appliances already.

First there was the weather-forecasting toaster, and now we've got the Internet-enabled air conditioning system. Uhuh, that was my reaction too. Carrier, the self confessed 'world leader in air conditioning', has just released its MyAppliance.com

First there was the weather-forecasting toaster, and now we've got the Internet-enabled air conditioning system. Uhuh, that was my reaction too. Carrier, the self confessed 'world leader in air conditioning', has just released its MyAppliance.com service and a range of 'smart' air conditioning systems to fulfil 'customer's service expectations'. Who expects their aircon to be hooked up to the net, for the love of God?

The MyAppliance.com Web site allows subscribers (remember when you only had to 'use' a home appliance - now you have to subscribe to them) to monitor the performance of their aircon system, as well as allowing technicians a much greater range of diagnostic options. If you want, you can even monitor your aircon via a WAP enabled phone, or set your aircon to call for a technician all by itself.

Of course there are many disadvantages to air conditioning via the net - slow download times for a comfortable home for one, and the idea of downloading and breathing in the AnnaKournikova virus is strangely disturbing. Broadband users may be able to get away with it, but those still stuck with a modem are better off using a desk fan, which can download air locally instead of from California.
