Nehalem (AKA: i7) now on store shelves

Affordable? Bah!

You can buy it now.

They all have 8MB of L3 cache, support DDR3 at 1066MHz, have a TDP of 130W and are built on the 45nm architecture.

  • The 3.20GHz i7-965 Extreme Edition retails for $USD 999 (StaticIce says the second lowest RRP is AUD$1990), and uses a 6.4GT/s Quickpath interconnect.

  • The 2.93GHz i7-940 retails for $USD 562 (StaticIce says the second lowest RRP is AUD$1049), and uses a 4.8GT/s Quickpath interconnect.

  • The 2.66GHz i7-920 retails for $USD 284 (StaticIce says the second lowest RRP is AUD$569), and uses a 4.8GT/s Quickpath interconnect.

We looked at the prices of these new chips, thought about the financial crisis, gazed at the relatively cheap 920, and realised why we love the proper use of overclocking.

There is much more detail, benchmarks and everything else about it in our feature on Nehalem.

That is all.

the i7 920 is going to be a very popular choice for upgraders.

Lets just hope it's worth it over a high-end Core 2 in the long run.

I have seen these available on the Auspcmarket site for a short time now. But the Cheapest CPU and Motherboard combination is going to set you back around $1200 and then you have to add DDR3 RAM. It all adds up to a very expensive system.

Wait 6 months and the prices might be reasonable.

We're paying twice as much as the US?

I'm sick of this shit.

Crap Aussie dollar + shipping = utter fail.

so something the small and light warrants an extra $1000 on top of it for the top model?

The U.S. dollar is also low, and irregardless, our low dollar + shipping does not equal anywhere -near- the difference in prices.

Profiteering cunts strike again!

we should do a bulk atomic only order from intel directly and cut out the distributors and shop owners :P

I don't really think the conversion of prices is that bad.

Given exchange rate volatility it's fair to assume 0.60 for any organisation planning pricing to cover the next few months.

Then remember that US retail pricing does not include GST/VAT, and the double the price is actually very fair given local importing and smaller shipping volumes.

US$1000 = A$1538 at an fx of 65¢ then add 10% GST = A$1700 so A$1999 ain't that bad, really. Expensive but still you want the latest and most extreme you have to pay for it...
