Here's a fun way to spend an idle lunch time. Skywatchers have had a long fascination with life on Mars, ever since the red planet's great 'canals' were first observe through early telescopes. I myself have fond memories of watching a TV show when I was kid, a documentary on space that was by Carl Sagan I think, that featured long, sad fly bys of collapsed Martian domes and cities barely visible through raging dust storms. Tom Van Flandern of Meta Research is similarly fascinated with such research, and presents a site that attempts to interpret the Martian landscape in terms of possible habitation.

Now I'm not going to take sides on this one, but regardless of what these images actually represent, there are some great shots and close ups of Mars. Great furrows in the sand, craters and weird formations formed by God knows what kind of geological processes. Are they eveidence of lava flows in a low-G environment, or are we looking at the wrecked remains of some planet spanning civilisation?

For now, who cares. NASA's sending more and more probes, and the pictures look pretty.
