Only one in five video games make a decent profit

Only 20 per cent of released video games ever make sizable profit according to analysis outfit Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR).

Strangely enough, the data only really garnered much attention thanks to being completely misquoted by Forbes. The site ran an article using EEDAR’s data stating that only four per cent of games ever turned a profit, when what the data actually said was that only four per cent of all games that ever entered into production make a profit. This is significant because the majority of games which go into development, don’t actually come out the other side and never actually make it to the shelves in the first place.

Of the games that do actually make it through to production, however, an astoundingly low 20 per cent of them actually make a "significant profit".

EEDAR blames the lack of profits on the fact that game developers and publishers tend to spend over 60 per cent of the allotted game-making budget on redesigning aspects of a game until deemed ready for action. EEDAR co-founder Geoffrey Zatkin even went as far as saying developers had "gone in blind as to which features would sell the game better".

Perhaps, however, in times of economic turmoil, developers would do better to turn their attention more to the task of making games profitable, rather than face a possible game over.

No! Don't tell them to head towards profit, we'll get crap cookie-cutter games instead! :P

Charcs can probably get some light shed on this, but I'm assuming that like the article said, they need to cut the crap and design the game once, and do it right. Saves time, saves money. Plan a project correctly, include all aspects, and create it once.

*shrugs

I've no experience in that industry mind you :)

only 20% of games make a reasonable profit?

Probably because only 20% of games are worth playing and the rest just do use the same old formula with a new name, which means only a few people will buy it.

Significant profit? So much more than 20% make a profit, just not enough to turn the producers into the rich fat cats they were hoping?

Only a low percentage of films also become blockbusters at the box office, we wouldn't want everyone doing that.

It would be interesting to:
a) Compare these findings to other entertainment mediums, such as music and film.
b) Know what types of games are included in these figures. Do they include mobile phone games, free-ware etc.?

Only 20% a making a sizable profit? That stacks up well against 80% of software projects straight up failing.

Sounds about on par with any startup business.
Probably 4 out of 5 don't turn a profit for the first few years.

Pretty much what Athiril, Truckasaurus and kikz said - what determines a "sizable" profit and how does this compare to the Hollywood results (didn't the games industry overtake film a while back???)
