So who remembers Napster? Once upon a time it was the only music sharing service worth belonging to, a cool badge of online courage that loudly decried 'I don't care about copyright, it's all about the music!' Well, not any more. The last nails in Napster's coffin is the recent agreement between it and three of the biggest distributors of licensed music in the world.

Napster has now signed onto the MusicNet initiative, run by AOL Time Warner, EMI and BMG Entertainment. The plan is to have Napster relaunch sometime in the next few months as part of this paid subscription-based distribution channel. In short, the name remains, but that's about it - Shawn Fanning's original dream of a freeform music sharing service is well and truly dead.
