Punters buying used PCs to avoid Vista

XP is proving to be a golden oldie.

Punters are apparently scrambling to get their hands on used, second hand PCs, not just because they offer a cheap fix in tough economic times, but mainly because they come loaded with Windows XP rather than Vista.

Studies carried out by both Gartner and IDC have found that because older software is often incompatible with Vista, many consumers are opting for used computers with XP installed as a default, rather than buying an expensive new PC with Vista and downgrading.

Big business, which typically thinks nothing about splashing out for newer, more up-to-date PCs, is also having trouble with Vista, with even firms like Intel noting XP would remain the dominant OS within the company for the foreseeable future.

Josh Kaplan, president of computer repair outfit Rescuecom, told PC World people wanted to stick with XP to avoid standardisation problems. His company has resold XP-based PCs to companies that use software that is incompatible with Vista and which would require a substantial upgrade to become compatible. "Having five PCs that are Vista and five XP can create training and compatibility issues," he said.

Of course, buying a second-hand PC without having to shell out for a Vista license is also much cheaper and certain cheeky resellers are attempting to bump up their own profits even further by selling computers with illegitimate copies of XP bunged in, something which Gartner severly frowns upon, by the way.

Naughty, naughty, chipping away at Microsoft’s billions like that. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Good. Forcing people into Vista won't work.

Let them choose.

A lot of retailers are offering an option of Vista or XP with new systems.

Well they will have to go over to Vista sooner or later!

Yes Vista is more hungry and sluggish then XP. And if MS hadn't lost site of performance over functionality then this wouldn't be too much of a problem. Even though Vista can be tweaked and you can turn off lots of stuff to get it running smoother. It just makes more hassle for IT when XP already runs fast and with only minor adjustments runs even faster. If only MS would release a service pack or tool to provide a centralised control area to chop and change everything running on the system.

but what about tri ram moduls with the new i7, they would need vist for the 6 gig?

xp 64bit will handle 16gb of ram
6gb of ram would still need vista 64bit too.

Either way it's still a hassle to use that much ram.

But Like Truckasaurus said. You can still get XP OEM on new machines. Lots of "beige box" still sell it as standard.

I've had my spare legit copy of win XP home and Pro for ages in OEM form. I've never looked back since i got Vista home premium. I don't find Vista laggy or sluggish at all. In fact it solely as an operation system has seldom failed me.

Old PCs for an XP license? Why not just hit up E-Bay for a commodore 64?

the reason alot of businesses don't want to upgrade to vista, is due to alot of their old programs not working in vista, but this is (from what I have read and gathered) due to their old programs being programmed by programmers, who took shortcuts, for example, putting a heap of the programs dll files and other librarys directly into the system32 directory to make it easier for them to call these files. Windows vista restricts this practice because Malware and viruses do this, and nothing should really be throwing stuff into the main windows system32 directory, but they did it. and now microsoft have denyed them the ability to (easily) do that. I have had someone install Lemmings for windows 95 on a vista machine with no issues, this is a case of the programmers not taking shortcuts. so whose to blame? I know people are still going to blame vista all the way to the bank, but I myself have been running vista for 2 years and don't see the need in running back to XP, but then I haven't shelled out 15 grand for a program that will only work on XP because the person(s) who created it decided to take shortcuts.

@SceptreCore "Well they will have to go over to Vista sooner or later!"

why? no they don't.

the company i work for only switched over to xp in 2005 or 2006 i think, and they have no intention of upgrading to vista. ever.

SceptreCore, perhaps you are one of those people whose opinions of Vista were formed after using it for five minutes on a low end laptop with a bunch of bloat installed over the top? I used to be that guy. I learnt better.

If you have a Conroe or better CPU and a few gigs of RAM, 64bit Vista is much faster than XP. Also the way unresponsive programs are handled has been improved dramatically, crashes that would slow my computer to a crawl before now don't phase it at all, which makes such an incredible difference to my day to day computer use.

As for XP Pro 64bit? It's a hacked together piece of crud with far less support than Vista. I just plain lost patience with the total lack of working drivers and switched to Vista Business 64bit. Never looked back.

i dont know what the fuss is about all this, i've been using vista on my old pc for 2 years & runs perfect.
(4200x2, 2 gig geil ddr & a agp x1950)

i think its too much sensationalizing about vista like what happened with xp. i still remember ppl saying how xp was buggy & slow.
