FCC wants porn-free free Web access for all

Internet without the money shot.

Everyone likes to get something for nothing, which is probably why outgoing Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin says he’ll push for a free, but porn-free Internet service in an upcoming December meeting.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Martin proposes that all Americans should have unpaid access to a filth-free wireless Internet service as the airwaves are being auctioned off, left, right and centre.

Apparently Martin reckons the winning bidder should set aside at least 25 per cent of the airwaves for a slower, but free-of-charge service, filled with appropriate, educationally-enlightening content... without titties. The rest of the airwaves would be reserved for a faster, paid service, with all the one-handed surfing you can stomach.

Unsurprisingly, critics are already up in arms, with consumer groups clamouring that the FCC’s 'filtering' – or censorship – would be too extreme, whilst wireless carriers are just upset they will only be able to rip people off for 75 per cent of the airwaves. Although, the 'official' reason they’re upset is that the plan might interfere with their own radio waves.

Sigh, so the old adage of 'the best things in life are free' doesn’t apply to Internet porn then. What a swindle.

@Trekker - what does that have to do with this article?

Interesting to see this. It won't happen though.

sorry about that.

It is just that governments like to try really dumb ideas about regulating this and that. On the net if i click on this or that i want to see it, not my gov telling me that i cannot.

I know that post has nothing to do with that above, but i think that our dumb fed goverment if try and follow the usa as some point , you just have to look at DRM

Problem is our Government is ahead of the US in the instance of internet filtering.

It'll backfire, people will get their free Internet and hack that system to get free pr0n ... defeating the original intention.

I really don't see that as a backfire, just something to look forward to !

If someone provides me with an internet service EXACTLY the same as my current one FOR FREE, but minus porn, I'm all for it.

I'd love to save myself $120/month

However there's just no f**king way in hell it's going to work out like that.

Hey if it's a free service then you take what you get. No porn means it will be used more as it is intended. Just leave the paid services unfiltered. It's a good move.

Regardless of what their reasons are, I want to look at what I want to look at. It's my decision, and it shouldn't be taken away from me.

What it should be is an opt-in filter for porn. So parents of the household can safely let their children surf the net without the worry of so easily finding such content.

I wouldn't have a problem with no pornography on the Internet I guess... but what exactly is pornography? And it's not like they are going to stop at pornography, is it? But is this even for real? This is USA we are talking about.
