Intel's new 0.13 micron processor features an 0.07 micron gate length transistors and six layers of copper inter-connect. Breaking the barriers to Moore's Law and developed the world's fastest silicon transistor, switching under a picosecond (1 picosecond = 10^-12 seconds) and only 20 nanometers (nm) in length. The new transistors can switch 1.5 trillion times per second, 10 times the speed of today's transistors!

Apart from 20nm in length it also has a gate dielectric of 0.8nm in thickness (that is only about 3 atomic layers!). This development, the results of which will be in volume production in 2007, will enable processors with a billion transistors operating at 20GHz. Compared to today's fastest Pentium® 4 processors having only 42 million transistors and operate only at 1.7GHz. With this development, Intel sees no barriers to Moore's Law.
