You have to wonder what the tactics are here…Microsoft have suggested they may be releasing a version of Windows after releasing XP but before the currently code-named Blackcomb hit's the shelves. This version has the codename Longhorn. This is despite spruiking off from Microsoft that Blackcomb will directly replace XP.

This may be because the anticipated release date of Blackcomb for the 2nd half of 2002 may not be achievable, or even realistic for Microsoft. It is believed that Blackcomb will become the Windows.NET that has been Microsoft has been threatening for some time.

The other theory is that Microsoft is preparing for a possible court order that instructs Microsoft to stop bundling products such as IE, messaging, Media Player and other apps. They may be moving to an environment, which gives users a choice of whether or not to install Microsoft apps as part of their Windows installation. Halleluiah!
