NVIDIA's CES graphics card launch plans outed.

Some people just can't keep a secret it seems, with sites leaking details and specs about NVIDIA's upcoming GTX295 VGA card all over the shop.

The graphics firm's latest offering will boast two 55nm GT200 GPUs linked via internal SLI, count 480 (240 x 2) stream processors, have a memory bus width of 896 bits (448 bits x 2) and a memory size of 1792MB DDR3 (896MB x 2).

It also won't be adopting GDDR5, and will be guzzling as much as 289W which, if true, is a preposterously large amount. But then the Green Goblin has never really been eco-green.

A photo on VR-Zone shows what it claims is a picture of the GTX295 with two DVI ports, one Display Port and 8+6 pins for the power connectors. Chinese site Expreview has one too, just the other way up.

NVIDIA is holding back in order to launch the new card on the opening day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Vegas, starting January 8th.

To date there haven't been any leaks about pricing, but the general consensus appears to be that the Green Team will be doing its utmost to remain competitive against AMD's 4870X2 card.

Competitive price wise or not, if the specs hold true, the GTX295 will pack quite the performance punch, possibly just enough of one to knock AMD off its currently superior perch. Just a question of how long that lead might last.

We're going to have a man on the ground at CES again, this year. This time it's Will Maher, from PCA Online, so expect lots of show floor updates.

No wonder they're leaking it now, they want a share price increase before Jan 8.

Just show that GDDR3 is still powerful and capable of running games maxed ;)

lol, nice to see that they are still chasing that elusive high end market. Mark84 posted a link in the Graphics forum which was a really interesting read. ATi was talking about its strategies in making GPU's at the moment and in placing importance in a fiesty mid to high range GPU rather than an expensive fast GPU. Embodied in the 4870 they want to appeal to the midrange sector and provide the best midrange solution possible, because that is where all the money is. Cards such as the 4870X2 are extras, an item they toss in on the chance that they will grab a few high end people.

:)

This sucker is going be ludicrously hot and loud!!! The GTX280 idles at ~50 degrees and under load gets up to 90 degrees with fan on full. And with twice the power consumption with the same area to work with...zomg.

nVidia have really gone to the dogs!

They shouldn't even be wasting their time with these kind of tactics. They need to regroup, make a plan and stick to it. I hope to see a 40nm nVidia GPU with 1GB of GDDR5 and a 1000bit memory interface. Next year with any luck, and if it's successful, a dual GPU variant perhaps.

This is stupid ATI has been on 55nm for quiet some time now and nvidia are finally taking their flagship card to 55nm, I don't know about other people but I think this is a bad move from a marketing/profit point of view. Also with 40nm just around the corner nvidia should be careful of rv870 as if it is 40nm imagine what kind of chip it could be not to mention how scalable it could be.

SceptreCore:
A "1000bit memory interface" isn't required if Nvidia are going to use GDDR5 technology.
They are only using 512/448bit for their GT200 series because they are using GDDR3.

GDDR5 and and a 1000bit interface would be silly, there's simply no need.
It would increase price way too much.

But it is going to be interesting how the next generation products from Nvidia and ATI compare.

I like idea of Nvidia's GTX295, but it's way too late for consumers to be able to have one for more than four months before the nest series is released.
That's Nvidia's only down-coming with this card - its lateness.

Just like my comment...the GTX295 is a little late. The card is also a little on the high end. As Shikimaru pointed out earlier, the real profits are to be made in the midrange segment. With the current economic circumstances in mind, aiming at the segment which is cashed up and looking for value would be a more sound investment, rather than going for glory.

Perhaps Nvidia had this card planned for some time and just had to roll with it. Delaying release, updating the memory to GDDR5 and tweaking their design to try and lower power consumption, may have left the GTX295 lingering until after Christmas.

Once the next generation of ATI cards hit the market, if all goes to plan, there should be some pretty darn good value products competing with Nvidia's offerings. Especially if the current ATI midrange cards were to move down in price.
