Lindows – Windows on Linux

LindowsOS is the name of a new operating system currently in development by company Lindows.com. Built around a 'Linux core', LindowsOS will not only run Linux binaries natively, it will also allow users to install and run Windows based software with no modifications needed – essentially, Windows on Linux.

While Linux has had the capability to run Windows binaries for quite a while, most notably through the use of WINE, LindowsOS is different. WINE requires users to install a copy of Windows via WINE in order to provide a 'compatibility layer' for Windows binaries to run on. LindowsOS, however, is an operating system built from the ground up to be both Windows and Linux compatible – thus you don't need a copy of the Windows operating system to use Windows applications.

Currently, LindowsOS is in preview release stage and plans are afoot to make it available for download from the lindows.com web site.
