The newest version of ICQ, ICQ2001b v5.15 (will this program ever come out of beta?) has been released. The major new feature is a P2P function that allows people to share entire directories with people on their contact lists.

Also new in the latest iteration of this popular Instant Messaging application are a spell check function, support for multiple languages and, we're sad to report, graphical emoticons. Even the great ICQ had to succumb to the evil that is graphical emoticons eventually, but we had hoped it would take a few more releases yet before the influence of AOL (owners of ICQ) shone through.

We're not exactly sure how AOL are getting around the legal issues inherent with P2P file sharing applications, but we are sure that, should the RIAA and friends decide to make a further example of P2P file share applications, AOL Time Warner would make a nice fat target.
