After many a late night playing Homeworld, NASA boffins have been inspired – why look for new resources on Earth, when there are limitless resources in space!

NASA is looking into the viability of off world mining in the hope of making future space colonies self sufficient in energy and raw materials, according to this article.

Among the research and projects being conducted are plans to equip a custom built drill, capable of drilling over 200 meters deep, to a mars mission craft aimed at deployment around the year 2007. If successful, the drill will be used for prospecting on mars for raw material deposits that could be exploited by future manned colonies.
