Google has announced its first annual 'Google Programming Contest'.
The challenge: to write a program that can do something interesting with 900,000 pages of Google data. Keep in mind that your program must scale well – 900,000 pages is 'several orders of magnitude' less than the entire Google data set.

On offer is a $US 10,000 prize, as well as a VIP tour of the Google facilities in Mountain View, California and (perhaps) a chance to have your code run over the entire Google database.

Before you start gathering assorted caffeinated materials for an all night coding hack, there's a few restrictions to keep in mind. The two most important are that you must be 18 years of age to enter, and that you agree to give Google royalty free license to use any code you submit as part of the competition.
