Microsoft not recalling the Xbox

After an article appeared on Bloomberg’s website with the headline ‘Microsoft Recalls Xbox Game Consoles Sold in Japan’, many smaller news sites either replicated excerpts of the story or linked to it as ‘news’.

After an article appeared on Bloomberg's website with the headline 'Microsoft Recalls Xbox Game Consoles Sold in Japan', many smaller news sites either replicated excerpts of the story or linked to it as 'news'. Admittedly, the headline on the Bloomberg story is extremely misleading. However, simply reading the article in full would have revealed that Microsoft has not recalled all Japanese Xboxes. Rather, Microsoft is offering to fix the consoles of customers complaining about scratched game discs.

In fact, the number of people taking Bloomberg's heading at face value seems to be so high that Microsoft issued a press release refuting the claim.

We're sure this incident says something about the attention span of your average Net addict, however we're much too interested in the latest New and Shiny to care about it any more. Mmm Shiny…
