Microsoft and Telstra have teamed up to offer Telstra broadband customers Voice over IP services using MSN Messenger and Microsoft Passport.

The system, which relies on users placing calls via their PC and using a headset to communicate, will require customers to set up a prepaid account with Telstra using MS Passport for identification. Once this is done, users can place calls to any destination globally.

According to Australian IT, Telstra plans to offer its VoIP service nationally at 40c for the first five minutes, and 12c per minute thereafter. Rates to international destinations will vary, with the quoted rate to certain countries being as low as 15c per minute.
