Intel price cuts on the horizon

Is this the beginning of a quad core price war?

Intel is planning price cuts to its lower-end mainstream quad-core processors on January 18.

Barron's Tech Trader Daily quoted Pacific Crest analyst Michael McConnell as spilling the beans. He said that the cuts are happening to spoil the launch of AMDs 45-nanometer Phenom II and "Shanghai" Opteron processors. The cuts are listed at between 14-40 per cent.

The Phenom II "Dragon" processor platform has been getting some reasonable to good reviewes and the Shanghai server chip has been flogged to HP, Sun, Dell, IBM, and Fujitsu.

It is looking like Intel is only targeting cuts on its quad core range.
