Life aboard a US submarine isn't exactly what you'd call “intellectually stimulating”. Get up at 3am for your watch, do your duty, eat lunch in the mess at 8am, do some more duty, eat dinner at 12pm, have a few hours off for miscellaneous activities and then hit the sack in your 1.2m x 0.5m bunk for a few hours shut-eye before getting up to repeat the whole boring process over again. Of course, this isn't an exact representation of what happens for your average swabbie (it's been a while since the US Navy invited Atomic HQ aboard, much to our disappointment.), but it's close. Now however, US navy personnel will have the chance to get some real entertainment during their off-times in the form of console gaming!

According to this report, “every US submarine has been given a video game console to cheer up its crew.” That's over 70 subs, at one console apiece, with around 20 games per console to keep bored sub mariners happy.

According to Atomic Spy Ring sources, consoles on offer will be the Xbox, the PS2 and the GameCube. As far as we can tell, there will be no choice between which console each Sub gets. Which, we suppose, is kind of unfortunate if you happen to be a Halo fan and end up stuck with nothing more than Zelda and a bunch of Mario spin-offs.

Whether the console plan is successful in raising sub mariner morale remains to be seen. However, Atomic predicts that no matter how popular multi-player Halo becomes in the US Navy, there will still be at least one person aboard every “boat” decrying the lack of keyboard and mouse support.
