Intel slashes processor prices

Massive cuts to nearly every CPU in Intel's line up.

Intel is realising it had better get inventive about shifting its inventory and is slashing prices on a range of processors in the Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Duo, Pentium dual-core, Celeron and Xeon product lines.

The company confirmed the price cuts to us, pointing punters to a new price list which lists reductions of up to 48 per cent on some processors. The mobile Celeron 570 (2.00GHz), for instance, was reduced from $US134 to just $US70.

Celeron processors seem to have taken the brunt of the price slashing, with reductions ranging from 19 per cent on 540s and 530s, to 35 per cent cuts on 560s and 585s, to add to the 48 per cent lopped off the Celeron 570.

Both the Intel core 2 quad chip, Q9650 (3.00GHz) and the Xeon X3370 (3.00GHz), received a 40 per cent snip, with the two dropping from $US530 to $US316. Three more Xeon processors, the X3360 (2.83 GHz), the X3350 (2.66 GHz) and the X3330 2.66 (GHz) took 16 per cent price cuts.

Another significant price cut was to the Pentium dual-core E5200, down 24 per cent from $US84 to $US64.

Along with slashing prices of older processors, the chip giant also tried to ease in new processors at slightly more affordable prices, like the Core 2 Duo E7500 (2.93GHz), being sold at $US133.
