AMD gets on the CPU price cut bandwagon

Both new Phenom II CPUs get a little bit more affordable.

Not content to let Intel have all the price dropping glory, and with our own review of the Phenom II in mind, AMD's dropping prices on both its new CPUS.

"We saw what Atomic wrote about the value of the chip," said AMD's Garrath Johnson today, "and so we've tried to that into account with our new pricing."

The final numbers are still a little sketchy, but it's looking like the Phenom II X4 940 will drop down to between $399 and $419, a drop of around $50 depending on where you price your chips. The lower specced X4 920 will also be dropping, down to $350.

Who says competition is dead in the CPU sector?

As nice as what Garrath Johnson said is, I think it had more to do with the fact that Intel dropped prices making them (Phenoms) worth less in value due to lower performance/$ compared to the Q9550.

AMDs virtually locked into keeping the X4 940 priced similar to the Q9450.

Overall good for us, but bad for AMDs profits.
