In keeping with the trend it established, Sony will be making sure the PlayStation3 will remain compatible with PlayStation2 and PS One games.

Ken Kutaragi, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, confirmed the compatibility. According to Kutaragi, '[The] PSone runs on the PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware. PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software and the format will continue forever.'

Also of interest is the expectation that Microsoft may make the Xbox 2 compatible with original Xbox games. Seeing as ATI has been confirmed as the designer of the GPU for Xbox 2, there may be problems getting games specifically designed for Xbox's NVIDIA hardware to run on the new platform.
