New York Comic Con gaming round-up

The New York Comic Con is on, and there's a mess of game news coming to light! Ghostbusters, Star Trek: Online and more!

In chilly New York, one of the great events of the geek calendar is taking place - Comic Con. From all over the US, and indeed the world, cos-players, comic-fans, sci-fi wierdos and TV tragics have converged to share their love of the fantastic.

Over recent years, it's also become a good place to spruik new and upcoming games, too, and the latest NYCC is no exception. There's a lot of good stuff come to light, so hear's our round-up of the best stuff so far.

Chamions Online, Cryptic Studios
This new MMO is set to give City of Villains/Heroes a serious run for its caped money.

The news from Comic Con is that the game is going to bring a lot of fresh ideas to the MMO genre. Probably the announcement that excited us most is that once players reach a certain level in the game, they'll be able to create their own evil nemisis.

This will be a fully-customisable villain (look, powers, even mythology can all be made up and tweaked by the player) that will make it their life's work to bring down the player's own hero. What's more, you'll be able to invite other players to help in dealing with your nemisis, and Cryptic Studios expects that some players will probably spend more time on their bad-guys than their good guys.

The game will be very action heavy, but it's also reported to be highly scripted and narrative-driven. There are literally pages and pages of dialogue for even the smallest setting in the game.

Star Trek Online, Cryptic Studios
If ever there was a recipe for serious geek addiction (and I admit I'm feeling the pull already), Star Trek Online must be the ultimate drug.

Not only is the game reported to be one of the most stunning MMOs from a visual point of view (as good as any sc-fi film, some lucky bastards who've seen the footage are reporting), but it looks like it will deliver a very authentic Trek experience. The game is set 30 years after the film Star Trek: Nemesis, during a time when the Klingons are again on the warpath. Players will be able to choose from being either a member of the Federation or the Klingon Empire, and will start as fully-fledged captains complete with their own starships.

Oh yeah.

As players progress through the game, they'll be able to recruit crew complete objectives both ship-bound and on a variety of planets, as well as exploring the depths of space itself. There will be a strong social component, with lots of space stations (think DS9) where players can go to hang out and drink some synthahol. The game will also feature all the known Star Trek races, plus the ability to create your own brand new aliens.
