55nm rumours about AMD's next offering.
The dark satanic mill says AMD's rumoured RV790 chip will be a RV770 in disguise.
Speculation that AMD would be using a 40nm process for chip has been replaced by speculation that it won't.
According to Expreview the RV790 is going to be nothing more than a souped up RV770 which has been overclocked to buggery [is that a technical term? Ed].
That might not be such a bad thing. An improved version of the RV770 might make a lot of sense and compete with Nvidia's GTX285. This could keep the hounds at bay until the new 40nm process is ready.
Expreview's report is based on an an unnamed source who said the RV790 will be named HD 4970 and be overclocked from HD4870's 750MHz to 950MHz.
Memory will stay the same and the HD 4970 will feature 800 stream processors, the source coughed.
