DirectX 10 heading to Linux and OSX

Giving the penguin and leopard something more to play with.

Windows isn't the be all and end all for everyone, since it can be very demanding of resources at times, and plain just won't do what you want at others, but the one thing it does do well is gaming.

DirectX 10 is a set of instructions that allow software to interact directly with the hardware, allowing textures to be shuffled around and other computational data to be worked on by the GPU core, and was originally exclusive to Vista (though Windows 7 will also have it).

CodeWeavers' CEO, Jeremy White, announced his company's outlook for 2009, specifically mentioning his CrossOver Games software:

We've just shipped a lot of those 'under the hood' improvements for games out in CrossOver Games 7.2. We're really pushing Direct X 9 support pretty far along, and getting ready to move on Direct X 10.

This means that Linux and OSX users who aren't particularly fond of Windows Vista may be able to play the latest games with all the effects and features intact, where before it might not have been possible.

Have a look at his outlook post to see what you think, but if we can finally remove the shackles of Windows and game on Linux? Well, it's going to be interesting to see what happens.

It still only does 'some' games. It needs to be a more generalised solution.

Will this mean we'll be able to run Window$ games out of the box without Wine?

They've always been pretty good over at CodeWeavers, although I hope they can improve compatibility over other games instead.
