Essential linkage: Admiral Adama gives the United Nations a piece of his mind.
In a little over 24 hours, one of the most impactful science fiction shows of our time will come to - I hope - a glorious finale. Battlestar Galactica is going out in style, with a two hour episode that will no doubt answer many of the show's long-running questions. And there might be the odd giant space battle or two.
But if the show is now effectively over, the impact continues. A couple of days ago the United Nations hosted a special panel, joined by cast and crew from BSG, to discuss the correlations of the show's depiction of politics, torture and religious unrest in light of real instances of the same from around the world.
Sound odd? Maybe, but here's an excerpt from sci-fi news site IO9's report on the event:
At one point the discussion lit a fire under the Admiral, and the talk of human rights turned personal for Edward James Olmos. The "Old Man" launched into a passionate speech about casting off the idea of race as a cultural determinant, and said we were one race, the human race. His voice echoed throughout the chamber growing louder until - I kid you not - he was yelling, "So Say We All," and the crowd answered right back. Hell, even I yelled it, I was in the fraking United Nations with Adama, the gods themselves could not have stopped this moment.
If you're a fan of the show, and that notion doesn't give you chills... All we can say is wow.
