Breaking news: Australian Government's Classification Board website hacked

Breaking News: Australian Classification Board website attacked by hackers

In the mad fight to finally get a true R18+ rating for Australian gamers, there have been a few blows passed from both teams - the latest one was a flat-out refusal of the rating back in February 2009.

On top of that is the contention over ACMA's blacklist, of which the Classification Board was recently placed in charge of.

While we're not sure exactly when it happened, hackers have posted this delightful message on the welcome page of the official Classification Website:

This site contains information about the boards that have the right to CONTROL YOUR FREEDOMZ. The Classification Board has the right to not just classify content (the name is an ELABORATE TRICK), but also the right to DECIDE WHAT IS AND ISNT APPROPRIATE and BAN CONTENT FROM THE PUBLIC. We are part of an ELABORATE DECEPTION from CHINA to CONTROL AND SHEEPIFY the NATION, to PROTECT THE CHILDREN. All opposers must HATE CHILDREN, and therefore must be KILLED WITH A LARGE MELONS during the PROSECUTION PARTIES IN SEPTEMBER. Come join our ALIEN SPACE PARTY.

We've also taken a screengrab for you, in case they wake up too soon and fix it:

Head over to the site to see if it's still hacked here (as of 10:00pm EST it was) - who knows when it will be fixed?

Atomic's Opinion: This type of behaviour isn't going to score the internet community any more respect, nor gain them any momentum from the government. These attacks certainly bring attention to the issue (all press is good press), but they don't convince those in power to change the situation at all - a real argument is needed to spark a change. What can do this? Well, we're not quite sure, but it'll be interesting to find out.

Well there is no access to it at the moment so I guess they have woken up. Maybe one day this backwards department will come into the new century without classifying it M15+ all the time instead of giving it an R+ one like it deserves.

Malicious? I whole-heartedly support such an action.

Good on them, would like to see more.

What actually makes you think this is just about an R rating for games? Since it seems to have happened just as Conroy was on live TV saying how the classification board along with ACMA will be in charge of the clean feed blacklist?

zephyr, you might be right actually, I don't watch live TV much.

i wholeheartedly agree with this as well.

if the government wont listen to logical arguments, its time to try the old standby of making their life hell till they bloody listen to the public.

it hasnt been taken down; apparantly its under a nice little DDOS attack.

the defacing was funny but thats even better..

couldnt have come at a better time too, after the seeming victory bloody Conjob had on live TV (dodged the good ones, rest were worst questions ever),so good on them for getting one back on The Man.
i dont like the rating system as a whole, let alone the restrictions on videogames.

while theyre at it, im hoping AFACT is next in the attackers sights..

Yes, I agree this won't make a difference to the outcome of... anything. But the problem is real arguements/concerns have been raised and they just reply with BS.

If I wanted to live in a Country that tries to control everything I do, see and hear then I would go and live in China, USA or back in the Middle East. I can't believe a Country like Australia is heading this way. When will Politicians and Government listen to the people and not the raddical few, I mean the Majority?

Why is it that the Government which is elected by the population and is suppose to protect the population through democracy is doing the complete opposite.
Its very obvious that the public doesn't want this crap to continue but do they listen. Noooo.
How democratic....

As funny as it is, all it does is make the internet community look like a bunch of kids who need protecting from themselves.

As much as it's like banging your head against a brick wall at times, logical argument through the right channels is really the only way things will ever get changed.

"As much as it's like banging your head against a brick wall at times, logical argument through the right channels is really the only way things will ever get changed."

I'd like to think that, but Conroy made it seem pretty clear last night by dodging all the questions that he wasn't interested in argument. Australia will conform to his views, or we'll all be child pornographers

Yep the office of information control for the masses. After they control the web using children as thier shield, theyll then turn thier attention to all movies and games etc that cant be accessed in Australia.

Theyre boiling the frog of freedom all over the world.
