Wolfenstein + iPhone = cool

Esential linkage: id's John Carmack talks about his effort to port Wolfenstein 3D to Apple's iPhone. And it's a really good read!

There are some people that you simply have to respect in the gaming industry, and one of those luminaries is John Carmack. As one of id's founders, he's not only responsible for arguably kickstarting the whole PC gaming thing, but he's still at id, still pumping out some solidly good work.

And, in his spare time, he ports classic games to the iPhone.

After thinking about the platform's capabilities a bit more, I had a plan for an aggressive, iPhone specific project that we actually started putting some internal resources on, but the programmer tasked with it didn't work out and was let go. In an odd coincidence, an outside development team came to us with a proposal for a similar project on the Wii, and we decided to have them work on the iPhone project with us instead. We should be announcing this project soon, and it is cool. It is also late, but that's software development...

That's from Carmack's blog-style post about the fun and challenges of taking Wolfensein 3D to the iPhone. It's a great, in depth read that looks back at a classic while still being very relevant to modern gaming.

And... it's John Carmack - the man's always worth reading or listening to. So check it out.

bastard: yeah I'm not old enough to have played Wolfenstein (at least when it was young). Is it freeware yet? I'd quite like to give it a try...

@Jeruselem, quite possibly the general public hate Hitler as much, if not more that the rest of the world.

His hidden bunker where he died is now a carpark/grass strip adorned with dog turds and cigarette butts.
