The high end of NVIDIA's pro range of video cards gets a refresh.
Nvidia is upgrading its Quadro range of high-end scientific and engineering graphics chips.
The GPUs are targeted at scientific and engineering boffins and not for the great unwashed or gamers which make up Nvidia's normal customers.
According to the press release the chips include the FX 5800, with 4.0GB memory, priced around $3,100, the FX 4800, with 1.5GB memory, which will set you back $US1,540, the FX 1800, $US450, and the NVS 295, $US130.
Under the bonnet of each chip will be the Nvidia Scalable Link Interface and Multi-OS, which allows 3D workstation virtualisation on the Quadro GPU. All this is new as far as graphics chips are concerned.
Nvidia said that with the SLI Multi-OS, applications and users can optimise productivity and costs through the use of multiple Quadro GPUs from a single workstation in a virtualised environment.
Quadro-based workstations are on sale from Dell, Fujistu-Siemens, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo and the new chips are expected to be in the partner's machines soon.
