Jon Johansen (better known as DVD Jon) is seeking compensation from the Økokrim (Norway's Economic Crime Unit) after four years of fighting for the right to watch DVDs on his computer. Johansen's lawyer, Halvor Manshaus, is demanding that the Økokrim cover his economic loses, as well as court costs '. . .and what would be called compensation'.
Johansen was brought to court after the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) filed a complaint with Norway's Economic Crime Unit over his involvement in the DeCSS program. DeCSS allowed Johansen (and countless others) to decrypt DVDs for playback on the Linux OS, which had up until then been impossible. Johansen was eventually acquitted in both his trial and appeal.
