A new variant of the MyDoom worm, already the fastest spreading virus/worm on record (at its peak the worm was infecting one in twelve emails, with over 1million copies blocked by MessageLabs in the first 24 hours) is set to launch attacks on various Microsoft websites, according to Kaspersky Labs. The MyDoom-B worm appears to be spread via email, or the popular P2P application, KaZaA.
Kaspersky also believes that the original author of the MyDoom worm is behind this variant, as source code for the worm has not been made publicly available. MyDoom-B also appears to be spread by machines which have already been infected by the original worm.
For now, Microsoft recommends that users avoid opening up unsolicited email attachments and to update their antivirus software to help combat the worm.
