Left 4 Dead training camp

Left 4 Dead training camp

Getting prepared for the inevitable zombie invasion of the entire planet.

"ZOMBIES!", you scream, as they flood around the otherwise deserted streets, chasing you down for your delicious human meats.

Well, you would be screaming that if they indeed existed now, but there's one group that scream it near daily - The NecroResistance.

Essentially a group of twenty-odd people holed up on a mountain in Idaho, America, they train every day for the zombie apocalypse bearing inevitably down on our heads.

From a rifle range to life-size models of the zombies of Left 4 Dead, they've created so many things to train up for this invasion that you'd half think they were a little...obsessed (and after all, who can blame them? Damn dirty zombies...).

[OC]ModShop had an interview of sorts with their leader, who said:

"There is no doubt in my mind that the people who created this game (Valve) know what the future holds for us. I don't think they intended Left 4 Dead to be solely for entertainment. They want us to learn, to perfect the zombie hunting skills in all of us. That's why we have to strive so hard to get those acheivments. And that's why you can play as a zombie yourself, to get inside the head of the enemy and defeat them."

While we're not quite sure that Valve had this in mind, it's certainly a good excuse to play a little more of it!

Not only do they have a full website with 12,000+ members, but they've also got a huge list of the best weapons to use against zombies (strange when they haven't got a chance to road-test any of them against any real zombies yet).

When the inevitable zombie invasion does come, and people begin cracking each other's skulls open to feast on the goo inside, you can rest assured that The NecroResistance will protect you - if you're in America, that is.

Somehow I don't see L4D as a zombie apocalypse survival training game at all. Afterall one doesn't learn shooting skills or real tactical skills from sitting down videogames. Especially a one with no other elements than blast and heal with weapons that are not realistic and having clear defined safe areas and ammo drops.

Great game without question. Zombie Apocalypse training simulator, that is a very long bow to pull.

Interestingly, having played Paintball alongside people who have and have not played CounterStrike or similar games, I find there's a definite... awareness that the gamers have that non-gamers don't.

It pales in comparison to someone who has actual small unit training, of course, but there is a benefit.

Still, I would love to see a Fallout style RPG dedicated to the zombie apocalypse. That would rock.

I'd have to say playing competition paintball and even skirmish situational awareness doesn't seem to count for much because people shoot first, shoot second and keep shooting third. I remember many matches where teams would be very careful and cover each other and then get wiped out by rambo charges. I've seen army guys get taken out from behind by fast charging paintballers. The vast majority were won by individual luck and crazyness rather than teamwork. Like Quake :P

The only time these skills really count is in serious skirmish. Then the attention to detail and any attempt at tactics pays off.

I never played comp for just that reason :) I usually prefer to play when it's people I know on both sides, so we can play with a reasonable approximation of tactics.

That, or playing against total strangers and thoroughly, thoroughly ruining their day out.

There is not greater enjoyment than going up against a team of big boofy blokes, demoralising them on the field, and then watching their faces at lunch when they discover that half the team are girls, and the other half goths.

When you are stalking throught he bush and a tree starts shooting at you can mess up you perception of situation awareness I tell you. Turns out it was a guy in a ghuillie suit in the end but at the time I just kept shooting at the tree that was spouting blue paintballs. I won funilly enough, although the rest of my team was wiped out.

So interstate paintball day then? :P

Right so where were we? Oh right L4D training people to survive the zombie apocalypse. Still not seeing it because of its lack of realisim and I'm not referring to graphics.

Now if you could actually learn shooting, fieldcraft, advanced medical skills, cultivation techniques, smithing and other skills via L4D sure it could be a training simulator. As a combat simulator alone again it doesn't teach anything except that guns make zombies die.

Somehow, if I get around to raising the cash to pay for the multiple weapon licences that I'd like to renew someday, I have the feeling that putting "prepearing for zombie apocalypse" in the reason for use box will just not cut it with the authorities.
