Microsoft's Xbox 360 E74 error now included under warranty

Microsoft finally cave to the increasing amounts of dead or dying hardware.

Fraught with hardware problems such as demonic disc-shredding drives, overheating GPUs and simply shoddy tech at launch, Microsoft have worked hard at fixing most of the Xbox 360's issues.

Unfortunately it takes a lot of complaint for them to actually accept that there is an issue when a new one appears - this one is the E74.

Similar to the Red Ring of Death (RROD) in its overall devastation of all things gaming, the E74 lights up a single red light and displays an error message in multiple languages, preventing any games to be played.

The good news is that Microsoft is actually doing the right thing, and has extended their three-year RROD warranty to also cover the E74 issue.

Arstechnica has done a huge amount of legwork for this, collecting information from around the net about the prevalence of this issue, and their article is worth a read.

Will the Xbox 360's reputation ever be fixed? At this rate, will any Microsoft console in the future be seen without huge amounts of scepticism? Only time will tell.

You can extend warranty but you can't escape the inevitable.

one of my mates just had that error, he decided to buy an arcade to replace the console and just mod his old one. IF THEY HAD ONLY ANNOUNCED THIS A WEEK AGO!!! now it's cracked open so no warranty for him. :S

The problem is NOT that Microsoft are or are not acknowledging faults. The problem is that they are not preventing the faults from occuring in the first place (ie, by building a better product), despite said faults being acknowledged. Extending a warranty does NOT prevent the problem occuring, nor does it give any indication that Microsoft are doing anything different production wise to preven the problem. In fact the sad reality is that after cost benifit analysis it is still more profitable for Microsoft to say they will extend a warranty rtaher than chnage production.

the reality them is this. Its not a matter of IF an xbox 360 will fail, but WHEN.

Solution? Do not buy an xbox 360. ever. regardless of how mnay times you can get it replaced.

We are as consumers in so many ways the architects of our own doom.

Microsoft must have the greatest PR department in the world.

It's almost like they could pre-condition their customers to say "Yum" when they get a shit sandwich, and then defend how great the shit sandwich was besides the fact it was made from shit in the first place, and they thought they were buying grilled cheese and ham.

Lol at the 360/Microsoft haters - i have had the 3RROD three times now over 2 different consoles, which sucks of course, but after all is said and done, Microsoft have repaired them quick smart, for free, and after several years of awesome gaming on the 360, a few weeks for FREE repairs is nothing.
I've had countless more problems on my computer, my car, even my kettle that have actually cost me money to get fixed.
And you don't see me telling you to not buy any of those...
