Geocities is dead...

... long live Geocities!

It's kinda sad, kinda expected, and probably going to make the internet a slightly classier place - Geocities is, after fifteen years of shitty animated gifs, illegible text and midi music, closing up its doors to new sign ups.

The site will remain active for a while, but the whole thing will shut down later this year. The free webhosting service was a staple of the early to middle internet years, and in honour of the site's long and mediocre service, we have only this to say.

SO LONG GEOCITIEZ, U WERE A A LOT OF FUUN, aND WELL MISS YOU LOTz!!11!

My first website was on Geocites, i basically consisted of shitty animated gifs, illegible text and midi music.

I coded it in the newfangled HTML in MSDOS edit.com on an XT, and uploaded it to Geocities at TAFE in 1997. The gif and the midi file were both hot-linked.

Smadge your comment should be on Geocities wiki. It captures its essence so beautifuly, yet so accurately.

Lol at hot-linking especially.

Same here, smadge!

First ever website (SpAnK's PhUnHoUsE) featured on that fine service and im quite happy to have that stricken from the interweb-record ;)

Rest in poorly coded pain, Geocities.
