When stealing a laptop from a dude in the shower goes wrong

If a thief has your laptop, why not mess with him a little?

People have their laptops stolen pretty darn often, and thanks to their relatively portable size and weight (read: huge and heavy) this can make it very easy to simply pick them up and walk off with them.

One unlucky guy was in the shower (though we note it was for an incredibly long time; he actually ran out of hot water!) when a thief broke in, stealing all his tech and laptop.

What the thief didn't know was that the shower-loving incredibly clean victim had installed a program on the lappy called LogMeIn, a VPN that can connect as soon as the thief hooked the lappy up to the internet - giving complete control over the system and even the webcam.

The smart thing to do was to grab pictures and find information about him, which the thief amazingly provided by changing the login name on the computer, logging in with the same IP address each time and even amazingly uploading pictures of himself there too!

Handing all this to a detective, the victim decided to mess with him a little:

He put photos of himself on the computer, and I downloaded them. He's a young guy, and handsome, too, so much so that I took to referring to him as the Adoraburglar. He uploaded his music onto it and I'd delete it off. It wasn't right. If anyone should be putzing around in front of that computer, it should be me. On April Fools' Day, I altered the photo of him that he'd set as his wallpaper to make it look like he had leprosy. If juvenile pranks were as good as my revenge was going to get, I was content to take that.

Sure it's a little childish, but when your tech has been stolen why not do it?

Head over to Newsweek to read his full story, and share in the lulz this silly thief provided.

Um, problem.

If anyone with half a clue stole your laptop, they'd format it. No more VPN client. No tracking. No joy.

Also, how did the thief manage to login? Did the guy leave his laptop unlocked? He deserves to be punished.

But they don't all have half a clue - case in point: this one. Notice how he got the laptop back?, for the entire price of $0 for a free program?

Any chance is better than no chance. If it can beat the stupid ones, why not use it?

Next you will suggest we disband the judicial system because we can not possibly catch all the criminals.

AIMBOT, there sure are alot of ignorant people out there. If I found a laptop, I wouldn't format it until I'd searched for anything of value on it.

Tezlin, er, I'd actually hand it in to the cops. Boring I know, but good karma, and if it's not claimed in six months, it's yours!

A large number of home computer users don't worry about passwording their accounts. For that matter a lot of business people don't either which is more of a worry... But generally a home pc user doesn't often have anything worth passwording.
